There were two very relevant compromises in American history. If these two compromises didn’t happen, the United States wouldn’t be where it is today, and it wouldn’t look like what it looks like today.
One of the compromises was the 3/5ths compromise. This was largely influenced by the Declaration of Independence. In the declaration of independence it says that all men are equal; therefore, the south wanted slaves to count as one person because they had much more than the north. The declaration of independance argued their point but that was really unfair to the north, so the country compromised on slaves being ⅗ of a person. Later this was changed after the election of Abraham Lincoln, but if the south did have that much power, things could have been a lot different.
The other major compromise was called the great compromise. It was also referred to as the Connecticut compromise because the man who created it (Roger Sherman) was from Connecticut. The Articles of Confederation’s plan of each state having to agree to any change one of the articles didn’t work very well, so New Jersey had a plan saying each state had the same number of representatives. Virginia’s plan was that the bigger states had more representatives than the smaller states. The big states favored the Virginia plan, and the small states favored the new jersey plan, so the great compromise was The Senate would have an equal number of representatives from each state and the House of Representatives would include one representative for each 30,000 individuals in a state.
These two compromises responded to the wants and needs of the American people by getting rid of the disputes. The people know that in America you are allowed to disagree with something. Compromises show how some states disagreed with some things. This shows how compromises respond to the wants and needs of the American people.
